CHAPTER TWENTY

The next morning, they prepared to descend into the Graystock Chasm. It was by far the longest vertical distance Levy had ever traveled. Gravity buffs on party members lasted much, much longer than Gravity debuffs on creatures, so there shouldn’t be an issue with his buffs fading. The bigger problem was separating during the descent.

To prevent this, all of them decided to link arms before they dropped off the side. They could tie themselves together with the rope they had in their inventory, but it was a bit too much of a commitment if they needed to separate quickly. Levy decided to cast a +10 Gravity resist buff on everyone to save time, but he had never used it to fall such a great distance.

Once all were ready, they stepped off the ledge.

Even with the Gravity resist buff, they picked up more and more speed.

“Levy!” Connie called out in fear.

“I’m changing it,” he informed her as he cast and spread the maximum Gravity resist buff he could, landing +20 on everyone eventually.

They still accelerated but seemed to reach their maximum speed soon after. Given how light they all were, no one would die when they hit the ground. They were about halfway now, and Levy could see that the tall mountains of dirt with channels between them looked closer to unearthed soil than stone, hardened after decades. The temperature was cooler as they descended into the shadows, but then it warmed slightly as they fell even deeper.

Levy was wrong. They were still picking up speed, unfortunately, and there was still a ways to go.

“Auden, Drale,” Levy said. “We’re going to need both of you to push us up before we hit the ground.”

“My Wind spell is even more useless than Drale’s Gravity Sphere.”

“Any other ideas, then?”

No one spoke up.

Connie eventually called out, “It has to be you, Drale and Auden. Try it now.”

Levy felt wind around his feet and something lifting his hair above him. He looked up to see the black sphere of Drale’s Gravity Sphere above their group. They slowed a little.

“It works well enough,” Levy said. “Save your strength for the last descent.”

Auden and Drale stopped, and a silence came over them. They descended farther, and then something caught Levy’s eye.

There was a dark hole in one of the mounds of hard earth, and two glowing eyes from within seemed to be looking at Levy.

“Everyone be quiet,” he whispered.

Connie gasped as she must’ve noticed the same thing. Levy saw other heads turning the same way.

Long, finger-like claws wrapped around the edge of the hole. The creature pulled itself out and kept going, and going. It was thin but with wings that unfolded and stretched out, each one wider than Levy’s group was long with their arms linked. The creature had the face of rat, with beady red eyes and large fangs in a mouth that was probably big enough to fit Drale’s huge head.

Dresmidon, 24

It screeched at Levy’s party. Levy’s party screeched back.

It took off at them.
